Warlords in the north and south held negotiations in 1919 under the pressure from all sides, trying to unify China by peaceful means, but because of the irreconcilable contradictions of both sides, especially the destruction of wan clique of Warlords, peaceful meetings were fruitless at last.At that time, China was in a period of social revolution, people's thoughts were more active, and public opinion can be expressed with a variety of newspapers and magazines. Therefore, powerful public opinion had a strong influence on both sides. This article attempts to select these data as main sources, such as "declaration", "Ta Kung Pao", "the East" and "Reviews Weekly". Because the ideas these newspapers or magazines presented were neutral or radical, which can help us learn in-depth what an important part public opinions played in the entire process of negotiations. To illustrate social public opinions played a role in this process, this paper will be from following sections to discuss:Introduction, mainly to explain the topic and its basis, then make political sense definition of "South", "North" in this paper.Chapter I, introduces international and domestic background before North-South negotiations. In the world, imperialist countries put pressure on China in various ways after war, looking forward to China's peaceful reunification, thus to protect their own interests. On the other hand, In China, due to the long war, the community's desire for peace and the reports media made raised public's awareness of the emergence of negotiation with its historical inevitability.Chapterâ…¡,â…¢, It's the most important part of this article. Through settling controversial problems on both sides by media before negotiation, and publishing articles that hunger for peace, it had put great pressure on them, urging them to sit together. However, the peace talks were broke up because neither of them would compromise. In this case, regulation of public opinion on their dispute made negotiation restored finally.Chapterâ…£, elaborates on the response of public after peaceful meetings broke down, selects "Reviews Weekly" in representation of North magazine as materials to illustrate public's responses to failure of negotiation.Although the negotiation ended in failure, but the role of public opinion can not be ignored in this process:creating a good environment to hold negotiations; promoting interaction among officials, merchants and civilians; forcing the two sides to have to make concessions under pressure of public opinion with the tendency of the day, even if nominal concessions, they contributed to the occurrence and development of negotiation. In that particular era, although the force of public opinion can not be ignored, the reality of negotiation ended in failure, make people realize that "strike down imperialist powers, and break down warlords" is the only way out for China, promoting a new awakening of the Chinese nation.
