Translation And Readers' Collective Psychology: A Macroscopic Perspective

Inter-discipline research is becoming the mainstream of research nowadays, as is the case of translation studies where new findings and interpretations are expected from collaborative research with other disciplines, as with applied psychology. At present, overseas and domestic translation research focuses more on translators' psychology from the microscopic view, but less on the interaction between translation and readers' collective psychology, which the author of this thesis intends to expound from the macroscopic perspective of Chinese translation history.By means of description and generalization, reasoning, argumentation and data analysis, and from the perspective of cultural artistic psychology, the author elaborates on (1) the reconstruction of ancient Chinese people's cultural psychology through and people's spiritual demand for consolation from translation of Buddhist scriptures, of which some notions have integrated into Chinese ethos, (2) the impact from the aggressive motivation of Western powers upon traditional cultural psychology of modern Chinese people who pressingly desired to transform the social reality with Western values like democracy, equality and freedom introduced by virtue of translation, which have instilled into people's mind, (3) contemporary translation activities that promoted the formation of people's communist consciousness, the awareness of reform and opening up, and the introduction to new ideas that enriched the collective psychology of the reading public with diverse psychological demands.The conclusion can therewith be reached that translation activities and readers' collective psychology are interdependent and inseparable in social and cultural context. Translations boom or depress with the rise or decline of social psychological demands, and readers are entertained or dissatisfied when translators do their work properly or improperly. Therefore, translators should try to render what caters to readers' collective psychology and readers may in turn construct their new cultural psychology with foreign ideological frameworks introduced through translation.
