Wang Lv is a painter and medical scientist between the late Yuan and early Ming, his theory of painting in The Preface to the Painting of Huashan Mountain is of great significance to direct people in both cognition and creation.During the period between the end of Yuan and the beginning of Ming Dynasty, there was a trend of simulation in China's painting world. Many artists were afraid of innovation because of coercion, they worshipped to simulate.or sacrificed to draw some natural and unrestrained works with simple lines. However, the dialectic in Wang Lv's theory contributed to redress this malady of China's painting world at that time.As we all know, different eras have different biased cruxes in painting, while Wang Lu's theory reflected in The Preface leads painting a right way and bears scrunity and test of time.The thesis is divided into five chapters.The first part is the preface which describs the aim and methods of this thesis. There is no denying that few studies are convincing to interpret The Preface to the Painting of Huashan Mountain for the moment; besides, the succession and innovation of Wang Lv's theory about painting are mainly reflected in The Preface. As a result, The Preface has great value to be investigated.The second chapter gives a brief introduction of both the social background and the development of painting at that time, and introduces Wang Lv's apprentice relation with Ma Yuan and Xia Gui, which will conduce to a further understanding about the origin and the development of Wang Lv's theory.The third part is an investigation about Wang Lv's views of cognition of painting, which is one of the focuses in the thesis.This chapter is set on analyzing some points of his theory in detail such as the relationships between form and idea, the connection between paintings of school and out of school, and the transformation between convention and unvention to refine and comfirm his cognition of painting by comparison.The fourth part is a summary of methodology of painting in The Preface. This chapter is set on expounding Wang Lv's experience in the process of painting which can be useful proposals for other artists:first, no painting without form, no drawing without idea; second, painting neither follows nor betrays historical tendency and principles; third, to feel from what you see, to paint from what you feel.The last chapter concludes this thesis with regard to the significance and the impact of Wang Lv's theory on the development of China's painting.Wang Lv's theory of panting in The Preface to the Painting of Huashan Mountain is still able to serve our confusions of artistic creation up to date. Owning to its completeness and accuracy, his theory is worthy to be studied and investigated. His idea that action follows heart, heart follows eyes and eyes follows beautiful sceneries like Huashan Mountain has become a standard to weigh artistic works of today.
