"Gudao"(Shanghai) officially came into being on November 12th, 1937. Given the unique temporal and spatial background,"Gudao"(translated) literature occupied a prominent position within the modern Chinese literary circle. The central literary status of Shanghai went collapsed due to the social and political turbulences; however, a new literary space was formed in"Gudao". The significance of translations on literary journals was well proved in terms of their functions in the construction of new literary space in"Gudao". Likewise, the habitual tensions between translations and Chinese cultural polysystem were highlighted through the studies on translations on literary journals in"Gudao".The leading role of literary journals was revealed in the process of the reconstruction of literary space in"Gudao". In addition, a great many factors involved with the construction of literary space like publications of literary works, cultivations of new writers, and innovations of literary styles were closely related to literary translations. Translated literary works, as an important part of literary journals in"Gudao", thus had various in-depth impacts on the development of literature and culture in"Gudao". West Wind, as a professional translation journal publishing articles translated from western literary journals, shall be counted as an example to be well investigated. The editors of West Wind devoted themselves to promoting and popularizing the style of western familiar essays, as well as challenging and overturning the mainstream ideas on essay writings with the aid of translating and introducing western familiar essays published on western literary journals. In accordance with its editorial aim, translations on West Wind thus had significant impacts on popularizing the style of western familiar essays and cultivating new essay writers in"Gudao"and beyond.
