Lefevere's theory of rewriting is such a theory that studies translation from the perspective of culture. He believes that all the rewritings in translations are out of the need to satisfy the three factors in the translator's times: dominant ideology, poetics and patronage. Among the three components, the former two take the most important roles. Besides, the theory considers such rewritings are made unconsciously by the translators. Different translators live in different times which have different culture and history, so translators of different times always rewrite the original works to make their translations meet the need of the readers.The Joy Luck Club, one of the representative works of the famous Chinese-American writer Amy Tan, once caused a tremendous sensation in the U.S. literature. Up until now it has been translated by three mainland translators and one Taiwanese translator. Lots of research has been done on the translations of this novel. However, there has been no study on the translations of this book from the perspective of rewriting and no one has ever studied the two translations of Cheng Naishan who has translated the novel twice.Therefore based on Lefevere's theory of rewriting, this thesis will study the rewritings in the two translations of Cheng Naishan from the aspects of dominant ideology and poetics and finally concludes that all the rewritings in the two translations of Cheng Naishan's books were made to meet the dominant ideology and poetics of given times and they are the reflections of the dominant ideology and poetics.
