A Study Of The Ideas Of Translation Of The American Chinese Sinologists In The North America (1995-2004) And A Revelation They Make To The Construction Of Medio-translatology In The Chinese Context

The American Chinese sinologists in the North America and their overseas works have drawn more and more attention from domestic scholars since 1990s. The oversea works written by those sinologists widen the horizon of domestic scholars and arouses people's interest to do research. Because their innovative writing, their practice of Western theories in the Chinese context and research methods of theirs have excited and inspired domestic scholars. In other words, domestic scholars would derive methodological instruction from the resarch methods, demonstration patterns and practice of Western theories implicit in the overseas works of those sinologists. There are many surprising perspectives in their study of modern and contemporary Chinese literature which shed light on domestic comparatists or scholars who specialize in modern and contemporary Chinese literature.The overseas works written by the American Chinese sinologists have made a hit at home, however, they have not received sufficient attention they deserve from the domestic translation scholars. Needless to say, this would be a great loss to translation studies. Based on Medio-Translatology theory, this thesis focuses on the ideas of translation of the American Chinese sinologists in the North America as well as a revelation they make to the construction of Medio-Translatology in the Chinese context, and attempts to fill a gap in domestic translation scholarship of overseas sinology. Nowadays, domestic translation scholars fail to put Medio-Translatology theory into practice, and only theoretically elaborate on the concept of Medio-Translatology. If translation scholars attach importance to research methods and demonstration pattern implicit in their works, it will be of great help for the construction of Medio-Translatology in the Chinese context. First, this thesis discusses the academic background of Lydia H.Liu, David Der-wei Wang and Leo Ou-fan Lee. Their mastery of modern and contemporary Chinese literature and comparative literature as well as history enables them to systematically study the problematics of what has happened and how it has happened in cultural contact or cultural dialogues by researching discontinuity, complexity and fragility. Second, research methods of these sinologists are also brought into discussion because their research methods would have a revelation to how to study cultural dialogues between the East and the West. Then, this thesis brings demonstration patterns and a revelation to Medio-Translatology into focus.This thesis aims at making the following contributions: first, it hopes to draw attention to the works of the American Chinese sinologists in the North America and to provoke thought on the text-centered research of the literary translation studies. Second, it hopes this tentative study would shed light on the construction of Medio-Translatology in the Chinese context.
