On The Translation And Introduction Of Oscar Wildes Works Around The May 4^th Movement

The period around the May 4th Movement witnessed a nation-wide upsurge of English writer Oscar Wilde's works in China. Before new literature took shape in China,translation and introduction of Wlide's works, like the author's contradictory life and disputable artistic views, went through a process from prosperity to decline. Is this a natural course or a choice of history?It is acknowledged that translation can hardly be defined as word-for-word transferring. It is more than blind passion of choosing this outstanding figure in Aestheticism movement in the late 19th century as the translating object, let alone causes behind translating climax and its final decline. In light of position and influence of translated Wilde in the target literature polysystem, descriptive method has been adopted in this thesis in order to have a probe into relation and interaction concerning translating process. Under the framework of Polysystem and manipulation theories in translation studies, this thesis analyses and discusses the translation upsurge around the May 4th Movement. Aiming to have insight into translation activities under ideological manipulation and its influence, this thesis tries to offer an acceptable explanation for the up-and-down process during the collision and melt-up of different cultures.
