This thesis takes the translation and introduction and reception studies of Oscar Wilde, the representative writer of English estheticism, as the study objects. Outer perspectives such as political ideology, economic and cultural context are used to analyze the alien attitudes towards Wilde in different periods of China in 20th century,setting forth the important roles played not only by the translator but also by the internal needs of the social environment.Chapter 1 is about the development of estheticism trend as well as its influences in China. Chapter 2 depicts the translation and introduction and reception studies of Oscar Wilde from May fourth Movement to 1930s, analyzes the reasons and contradictions of the"Wilde wave"in the Movement of New Literature from the perspective of the deliberate misreading by the translators. Chapter 3 focuses on the indifference to Wilde and the scarcity of translation and introduction of him under the main reinforced ideology during 1940s and 1970s. Manipulating theory is applied to the analysis of The Happy Prince and Other Tales, the only book of Wilde that is published at that time. Chapter 4 gives a review of the reconsideration of Wilde during 1980s and 1990s in the new literature context. The translation and introduction of Wilde comes back to from its political to literary and poetic functions. Through the comparison with the reception studies of estheticism in Japan, Chapter 5 highlights the basic characteristics of translation and introduction of foreign literature in China.
