Literary translation compensation and strategies for it constitute a very important academic topic. This topic has been discussed by scholars, but it is yet exhausted, and it still appeals to many scholars.First, this thesis presents a survey of researches on reception aesthetics & literary translation compensation and clarifies the relationship between the former and the latter. Next, the thesis explores principles and strategies for literary translation compensation, focusing on the different compensation strategies. Then, it makes a detailed case study of the translated novel The House on Mango Street, illustrating the compensation strategies employed in the version with quite a number of typical examples, which are analysed one by one. Finally, the author concludes that compensation is essential for literary translation, which is a dynamic process, and that the translator should make careful choices of compensation strategies guided by reception aesthetics by taking the readers into account and paying close attention to the change of his readers'horizons. The thesis aims to prove the absolute necessity of literary translation compensation guided by reception aesthetics and to verify the feasibility of the strategies for compensation involved in literary translation. It is sincerely hoped that this research will contribute to translation studies and benefit literary translators.
