Dynamic Compensation Strategies In E-C Translation

A good translation is one that produces the same effects on the target readers as those produced by the source text on the original readers.However,different languages have their own characteristics,and the loss of the meaning occurs inevitably.This report is a case study of how the compensation strategy should be applied in the English-Chinese(E-C)translation practice so as to offset the loss of meaning.The translation project contains two chapters excerpted from The Story of Naxos,which tells the story of the growth of a record label.It also introduces many artists,composers and conductors in the field of classical music.According to Reiss' s text type theory,The Story of Naxos is an informative text which intends to convey facts such as information,knowledge,opinions,etc.The Story of Naxos contains some background information,so translator's misunderstanding or ignorance of the original culture could result in the loss of meaning in the translation.Therefore,it is necessary to adopt some compensation strategies to offset the loss in accordance with the text type,ensuring the accuracy and readability of the rendering.Guided by the compensation theory,this report focuses on the dynamic compensation strategy and explores the specific application of the compensation strategies in E-C translation practice by adopting the techniques of annotation,conversion and specification from cultural,grammatical,semantic and aesthetic perspectives.The analysis of specific cases in the translation project demonstrates that the compensation strategy plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of the translation.
