| The dissertation focuses on 20th century Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla and his tango nuevo music. With a survey of Piazzolla's composition periods and opuses, the article provides an analysis of tango nuevo music's features, including aesthetic qualities and musical characteristics. Besides, the article discusses the meanings of tango nuevo's style toward tango music history and western contemporary music composition.The dissertation will be divided into four parts.Chapter one mainly introduces the historical background about Piazzolla's tango nuevo music, including Argentine art music history and tango music history.Chapter two concerns the periodization of Piazzolla's musical career. In each music period, some typical composition has been chosen for essential musical analysis, which in order to conclude the music tendency and style of separate period.Chapter three concentrates on the tango nuevo music itself. This part first induces the overall aesthetic qualities in general, then goes deep into the specific musical characteristics consisting of rhythm, sound, instrument, polyphony, form, harmony.In the last conclusion part, the article discusses the meaning of tango Nuevo music from the perspective of tango music history and western contemporary serious music composition respectively.
