A Probe Into Liu Zhongde's Translation Thoughts

The research on translators, for long time, is a field integrating translation practice and translation theory. On the one hand, a system of scientific translation theories can ensure the correct operation of translation practices; on the other hand, the reconsideration on translation will be achieved if translators can generalize their experience then sublimate it.Liu Zhongde, a respectable translator who was a typical theorist tending to combine Chinese and foreign translation theories, as well as ancient and present ones, was highly remarked in Chinese translation circles. Therefore, this thesis chooses Mr. Liu as the research object, which is analyzed through three perspectives: introducing his earlier life experiences which influenced his academic development deeply; stating his translation thoughts in order to show his understanding towards this great cause all through his life; exemplifying his translation thoughts vividly via his version of"Emma". All these three approaches will ensure our having a clear outline to understand Mr. Liu's systematic translation thoughts.This thesis consists of seven chapters: the chapter of introduction makes a brief statement of this thesis'background, significance, and structure; the second chapter is literature review, which mainly introduces the study object---Liu Zhongde and his translation of"Emma", as well as being a brief introduction to the English novel"Emma"; the third chapter states Mr. Liu's idea on"what is translation"and"what is the nature or essence of translation", i.e. his meta-thought on translation; the fourth and fifth chapters respectively analyze translation principles and strategies Mr. Liu insists on; the sixth chapter makes a probe into the philosophy root of Mr. Liu's translation thoughts and academic thoughts as a whole---golden mean; then as a creative attempt, this chapter illustrates translation philosophy by discussing its potential, significance; the last chapter, as a conclusion, generalizes the contents of this thesis, then gives some remarks and evaluates the prospect of this research.
