A Study On The Evolution Of Liu Zhongde’s Translation View From Three Chinese Versions Of Emma

Professor Liu Zhongde is an excelsior translator and scholar in our country, who has made great contribution to the research and development of Chinese translation theory. In his long-term translation practice, Professor Liu formed his characteristic translation style and view. As the first to translate Emma in China, Professor Liu began to translate this novel in 1944, and the translated version was published in 1949. Later, he translated it again in 1982 and 1993.The three versions of Emma run through his life, and also reflect the evolution of his translation view.The thesis takes Professor Liu’s three translated versions of Emma as linguistic data, and thoroughly analyse his evolution process of translation view, from insisting literal translation to taking excellent rate of literal translation combined with least amount of free translation. I also study the origin and evolution of his new three principles "Faithfulness* Expressiveness and Closeness "("Xin, Da and Qie"). At the same time, it will take the third and fourth chapter as the main parts of the thesis to study the evolution of his translation view. In the third chapter, the author will make a comparison of the three Chinese versions, with specific examples to reflect his different translation views in each period. The Chinese version of Emma,1949, was translated in his early time, which was wholly used the literal translation. And the language was also obscure relatively. Therefore, the author contrasts it with a clear and coherent modern version, which not only can help readers understand the original, but also embody Professor Liu’s literal translation in a better way. Secondly, the thesis will analyse his translation view of later period. And the author will compare the version of 1982 with the 1949, and find the modifications, which aims at expressing his translation view of "taking excellent rate of literal translation combined with least amount of free translation". Then, the three new principle "Xin, Da and Qie" will be explained, and it will take the version of 1993 as the analysis material and compare it with the version of 1982 to thoroughly analyse the reflection of his new principle "Xin, Da and Qie" in his translation practice. In chapter four, the thesis will analyse the reasons and significances of his evolution. Through the explanation of objective and subjective reasons to study his evolution process, and make a further study of the significance of his evolution in academic and practice. Through combing Professor Liu’s evolution of translation view, to think deeply of literal translation and free translation and review the dispute of the two translation approaches in translation field. And this thesis will better guide translators to choose approprite approaches in translation practice.
