The great poet William Wordsworth is mainly known with Coleridge by the publication of Lyrical Ballads, which initiated a revolutionary movement in poetry and ushered in the Romantic Movement. Lyrical Ballads is a collection of 23 poems set in rural England during the late eighteenth century. The poems in the anthology express the emotional responses to the natural and supernatural in conventional verse. The first poem is Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, which is about a supernatural curse, and the final one is Wordsworth's Lines Composed A Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey, which features a changing relationship to the natural world. The poems in Lyrical Ballads are composed as experiments by Wordsworth to testify whether the language of common people may be adapted to the purposes of poetic pleasure. The poems focus on the humble subjects and rustic settings, although a few are about the mythical and supernatural. He cares about nature and various beings in nature. He associated with nature and analyzed the relationship between man and the environment, complexities of the pleasure and pain that arise there, and the deep sympathies interrelated within them. The publication of anthology aroused much attention from the literary circle, much of which were critical at first, however, the poet received more and more praise gradually. Scholars have studied the poet's works with nearly all the methodologies and views of criticism from different angles, such as the language, the plot, the structure, the theme, the vocabulary, the style and the philosophical thoughts. And this thesis intends to analyze Wordsworth's poetry from the angle of ecology and applys his ecological thoughts into the present practice of the improvement of the ecological environment, proposing some specific suggestions. This thesis consists of an introduction, the main body and a conclusion. Its main content is as follows:The first part is the introduction, which gives a brief account of the present environmental problems and the prevalence of the ecological idea, and it also gives an account of the comments on the poet and his works all over the world and emphasizes the ecological significance in his works. The second part is the main body, which is made up of four chapters: Chapterâ… provides a brief introduction to the eco-criticism from the ecological perspective and the formation of Wordsworth's ecological awareness expressed in his works. As the environmental problems increasingly catch people's attention, people exert their efforts on the preservation of the natural resources and the solution of the ecological crisis. Therefore, the study of eco-criticism appeared naturally as people turned the attention to the study of the various literary works of great writers, poets and dramas. Eco-criticism appeared in the 1970s, and is described by scholars as the literary criticism studying the literature-nature relationship with the guide of ecological knowledge, especially the ecology holism thoughts, and it endowed literary criticism its due natural and social duty. Next, pertaining to the formation of Wordsworth's ecological awareness, this thesis narrates the factors that influence his ecological awareness which include his personal experience and the effects of the era. His personal experience refers to his childhood life in the open-air, and the effects of the era refer to the influence of the French Revolution and the Industrial Revolution.Chapterâ…¡mainly discusses the adverse effect of the Industrialization on nature, agriculture and human relationship. In the time of the Industrial Revolution, Wordsworth observed its great influence on agriculture, nature and society. In order to pursue more profit, people developed economy to satisfy the endless desire, which at the same time harmed the natural environment and the living organisms in the ecosphere in different ways. This is harmful to the development of agriculture and the balance of the ecosphere, and the Enclosure Movement drove the peasants into a more difficult situation. People driven to work in the factories in the big cities felt lost and had to work hard. The poet appeals for the communication among people and the equality both in nature and human society.Chapterâ…¢mainly discusses the topic of establishing the balance of ecosphere by respecting equality between human and nature. And he also emphasizes the ecological holism theory. The poet observes and comprehends the important relationship between human society and nature. He depicts man's dependence on nature both for provision and the comfort for the mind. And humankind needs to respect nature, learn from nature and keep a harmonious relationship with it. The poet believes the unity of all, and the various forms of nature connected to each other belong to one galaxy. Wordsworth makes no division between humankind and nature or between nature and God, and holds that they all adhere in a mighty unity. Therefore, humankind, as a part of nature, ought to be modest and learn form it rather than just explore the resources from it by employing the scientific and technological knowledge.Chapterâ…£mainly provides the proof for the improvement of the environment from three aspects, the theory of the Earth System, the development of ecological civilization and low-carbon economy. And it also gives some specific suggestions to develop low-carbon economy to enforce the sustainable development. As the research on the earth system as an organic whole develops, there appears the sustainability science and scholars in this field propose some important problems on the research of earth system in order to keep sustainable development. The ideology of ecological civilization needs to be set up in the demand of the establishment of an over-all well-off society in China. There is a need to learn from the ecological system, develop economy while paying attention to the ecological balance. In addition, it is important to pay attention to the innovation of ideology, structure, technology, consumption and management, protecting the natural resources and the environment from different ways and adopting the way of sustainable development. The conclusion summarizes this thesis. Wordsworth holds that the industrialization has adverse effects on agriculture, nature and human relationship. He advocates the ecological balance and the equality between human and nature. On the basis of the analysis of the ecological idea in the poet's works, there is a need to appreciate the ideology of the earth system, the establishment of ecological civilization and development of low-carbon economy. People need to establish a harmonious relationship with nature and conserve the ecological balance.
