The self-reference effect is information actively related to self was better recalled. Rogers found the phenomenon in 1977, and then many researchers did actional and experimental researches on it. Based on these researches, the relationship between self and memory has been settled. As an independent special structure, it has a particular function for individuals to process information.studies about self-reference have great achievements, but little studies touch the content on different ages of subjects, and they didn't make delicate division on adjective words. The present thesis aims to explore the content on self of adolescents and the influence on their self-reference, which caused by different classifcation of adjective words of personality using experiment.In order to test the self-reference effect of adolescents, the first experiment selects17 boys and 27 girls in grade 2 in junior middle school as subjects. The results show that there is better memory on self-coding, but there is no better memory on mother-coding. In the second experiment, the researcher adds idol-coding to discuss SRE of junior middle school students in further.Selecting 19 boys and 27 girls who are in grade 1 in junior middle school. The result is that self-coding and idol-coding show better memory, while mother-coding hasn't. The third experiment tests the effect of SRE on different adjective words of personality. There are 31 students in grade 3 as subjects (14 boys and 17 girls).The result of it is the same as the second experiment, when analyzing the totality of adjective words. However, it shows different results when analyzing various classifications of adjective words. Self-coding appears reference effect on adjective words of self-direction and others-direction, but no reference effect on object-direction. It has effects on self-direction of idol-coding, but no effect on the other two directions. There is no effect on the three directions of mother-coding. The forth experiment aims to test SRE which is under the competitive condition.Selecting 32 students(16 boys and 16 girls) of grade 3 as subjects,the research finds that the best choice of them is self-coding,the second choice is mother-coding,and the least choice is idol-coding.The conclusion is that the adolescence shows SRE in most condition but objec-direction shows Idol-reference effect only on self-direction, and no Mother-reference effect.
