College English coursebooks are becoming increasingly important in the teaching of college English in the higher-level institutions in our country. It is not only the one of keys to implement the National College English Syllabus, also is core materials for teachers to organize classroom activities and study for students. Its impartance is obvious to Chinese college students who in particular depend on coursebooks in the procedure of their English study because of their learning habits and the fact that there are few materials available. With the reform of College English teaching,a variety of coursebooks are compiled and used in so many universities and colleges which are claiming to be consistent with the National College English Syllabus. As one of them,New Horizon College English has been popularly adopted in plenty of colleges and universities since its publication.The thesis attempts to make an evaluation of New Horizon College English book series. By the guidance of evaluation criteria, the thesis evaluated the text book from the aspects of guiding ideology, design and organization , materials selection ,language contents ,development of skills and teacher'book. The data of the thesis is collected from questionnaires,interviews and the corpus of the texts. This research selected both the qualitative approach and Quantitative approach according to the character of the data. The data collected from questionnaires were analyzed by using the computer software SPSS.According to the findings, New Horizon College English series is suitable to most non-English majors. This series of books all advocate people oriented and try to meet students'requirements. It aims to develop and practice listening,speaking,reading,and wring well in order to cultivate the students'abilities of integrated language use. As a set of three-dimensional materials, the compilers have done very good jobs in organization and design. The selection of content and topics focuses on comprehension, authenticity and interest. Yet, there are some limitations as to integrated skills-training. The lack of learning methodology and strategy is also the insufficiency of the textbooks and teachers'books.The information derived from this research would be very fruitful,because there are detailed analyze of the coursebooks which can help teachers and students use them more effectively and some suggestions can stimulate teaching procedures to the larger extent.
