Founder Of Free Radical Of New China, Liu Youcheng's Aca-demic Growth And Contribution

Liu Youcheng is a famous organic chemist in China, Chinese Academy of Sciences and Fellow Royal Society of Chemistry. As the founder of Organic Free Radical Chemistry, witness of the development of Science and Technology of new China, Mr. Liu's life experiences and academic growth process are typical of the times. During 1930s and 1940s , he received the National Government's education then studyed abroad to learn advanced Western scientific knowledge, after the founding of the new Chinese government he returned and made great contributions to China by what he has learned.Liu Youcheng born in a scholarly family, starting from primary school he accepted western modern education, during his junior middle school because his family was difficult, he dropped out of school for one year at home. Affected by the war, he left his home, through ups and downs he finally admitted into the National Central University. He obtained a 1942 study in the UK the British Council scholarship, then transferred to the United States for further studies, it is in the University of Chicago that he embarked on the road of radical chemistry. Return process that twists and turns, until 1954, he took the President Wilson number home.After returning ,he obeyed the country's need to go to Lanzhou University and joined the wave of building the Northwest, responded to the national call, he successfully synthesized with semi-conductive conjugated polyphenylacetylene polymer.". After the Cultural Revolution, he actively promoted international exchanges of the free radical chemistry, and held the International Symposium in Free Radical Chemistry in Lanzhou to promote the construction of the State Key Laboratory of the organic chemisty. During his later years ,he returned to his hometown in Anhui where he has made his own contribution in the construction of the Chemistry Discipline of USTC. His achievement in single-electron transfer reactions, free radicals and other cutting-edge field has made a positive contribution in the development of free radical chemistry, the promotion of the intersection of radical chemistry and life sciences. His research in the field of free radicals promote the mechanism of organic reactions, petrochemical, polymer, radiation chemistry, life science development, and has made important contributions in the development of organic chemistry . Liu Youcheng teaches in LanZhou University and USTC for more than 50 years, he not only made a series of academic research of international standard but cultivated a large number of young talents. in the occasion of 50th anniversary of USTC in 2008, he donated his savings of 300 thousand to school to set up Liu Youcheng Scholarship, he made special contribution to motivate students to become pillars of the country. The academic growth course of the old scientists can be said a microcosm of the history of scientific development of china and some memory of the scientist often can't be found in the documents and archives. Based on the interviews of Mr. Liu, the text explores many little-known historical details, supplement the vacancy of the documentary record, providing a number of important historical materials for the further study of history of Chinese chemistry.
