Translation Study Of Dialogues In Emma Based On Cooperative Principle And Politeness Principle

Literature translation, the communicative tool between two language societies, plays an important role in promoting the political economic and cultural development. Fiction translation is an important component of literature translation. Fictional dialogues, the essence for a fiction, bear great significance in presenting the image and personalities of characters. It can be safely said that the quality of the translation of the whole fiction will be mainly influenced and decided by that of the translation of the fictional dialogues. Therefore, it is worthwhile to do a research on the appropriate translation of fictional dialogues.The cooperative principle and politeness principle have good interpretation power for the translation of fictional dialogues. In this thesis, representative dialogues will be selected from Emma and three translation versions of these dialogues will be compared and analyzed with the direction of cooperative principle and politeness principle. It is expected that a relatively new view of angle will be adopted to improve the translation of fictional dialogues and the theory of literature translation will be enriched, besides, it is hoped that the research on Emma will be developed and its readers could get a better understanding of the fiction.Based on cooperative principle and politeness principle in pragmatics, this thesis attaches attention to the reflection of the implicated meaning of fictional dialogues in translation. It is mainly divided into three parts. In the first chapter, the theoretical basis, i.e. the cooperative principle and politeness principle are expatiated, and the generation of conversational implicature is discussed; in the second chapter, attention are paid on the translation of fictional dialogues, the importance and premises of revealing the implicated meaning for fictional dialogues translation are given, and the significance of the two principles for the discovery and translation of conversational implicature in fictional dialogues are discussed, the translation standards for fictional dialogues are also provided; the third chapter is the main part of the thesis, representative dialogues are selected from Emma, and three translation versions of these dialogues are compared and analyzed under the guidance of the two principles and the steps for fictional dialogues translation in the direction of the two principles are summarized.
