Firstly, this paper reviews the basic elements, theoretical basis and domestic and foreign research of cooperative learning, and then explores the effect of cooperative learning in the college oral English teaching by experimental study. In order to collect effective information and data to ensure the validity of research findings, qualitative and quantitative research methods are adopted in this study. The research subjects are non-English students of grade 2009, Class 17 and Class18 in JinCheng College of Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronauticas; they have reached level 2 after English placement test. Using the statistical software SPSS14.0, the data of two classes are independent samples test. The results show that the two classes have no significant difference. As an experimental group, Class 17 uses cooperative learning method, while Class 18 is conducted with traditional teaching methods. After a year of cooperative learning experiment, the author collected a variety of data through test, questionnaires and class observation.The results show that: cooperative learning theory and teaching methods is consistent with the characteristics of spoken English, it can not only improve the students'spoken English but also enhance their motivation and improve their class participation, and reduce their anxiety of English learning. Finally, the author gives some suggestions of how to improve the use of cooperative learning in College English.
