| In Hong Kong and Macao, the appearance of news Mandarin in the TV programme is a kind of socioLinguistical effect caused by the henomenon of returning (to China)? and it is a kind of variety of Modern Chinese formed in a special environment. Its regional characteristics are mainly reflected in its distinctivefeatures words. This paper will, discuss the distinctive features of the regional words linguistically, and it will also discuss the social cultural background for generating the features.This paper is divided into three chapters~ The first chapter is an introduclion which will give a biief account of the historical background of news Mandarin in TV programme of Hong Kong and Macno, its significance, definition, classification, report forms and basic characteristics. The second chapter is the main part which will, through transcription of the common words and expressions from Cantonese to Mandarin analyze the general characteristics of news expressions, introduce six classes of the distinctive-featured words of news Mandarin in TV programme in Hong Kong and Macno, study and classify their formations origins and styles, probe into the social cultural basis for the dialectal words transforming into the common speech. The third chapter is a conclusion which will give a brief swnmery of the whole reseaith work, point out a new direction for the study on the words and expressions of news Mandarin in TV programme in Hong Kong and Macno.
