With the fast development of TV relay and mass media,NBA,an important symbol of the US pop culture,is exerting more and more influence in China. However, due to a lack of background knowledge and professional expertise from translators working in this field, translation of NBA-related information is constantly haunted with problems like material scarcity, lack of timeliness, and inaccurate rendering. To make things worse, there is scarcely any research into the translation of NBA news into Chinese.Featuring timeliness and brevity,NBA news dictates use of simple words and sentence patterns. As a type of soft news,it shares with other news types many textual characteristics while boasting a unique vocabulary that highlights its own style, which poses a problem in translation because of its sheer volume and the difficulties in finding an equivalent.Under the guide of translation variation theory, this report seeks to study the translation of the featured words and phrases used in NBA news and their adaptation in Chinese context, making use of first-hand material from ESPN.com,Houston Chronicle,Yahoo! Sports,Bleachers Sports Network,NBA News and other mass media. It focuses on featured words and phrases like terms, abbreviations, names&nicknames, new words, midget words and fuzzy words, sums up via a case study the difficulties and problems in NBA news translation from the perspectives of semantic equivalence, information incompletion and rendering of fuzzy words, and explores the adaptation strategy in solving these difficulties and problems.
