American Western novels developed along with the exploitation of the western territory In 1803, America bought the Louisiana Territory from France. From then on, there began the phase in American history when people moved westward and expanded United States territory. This phase lasted until the end of the 19th centy. The West of America was claimed to be he hope of Americaand he second paradise. The Great Plains attracted people of different walks. Yet those who dominated the Great Plains were cowboys. They were the real masters of the West. They were upright, sincere, industrious, brave and vigorous. They valued the Code of the West. The appearance of the cowboy character led to the later stereotype of the Western. In 1902, Owen Wister published a novel, Ih Y1rginian. He used the new and popular cowboy as democratic hero, and his work was shot through with the nostalgia that characterized the trenuous age. With this novel, he paved the way for hundreds of Westerns that were modeled after its form. Yet the following writers had lhcur own characteristics. Writers such as Zane Gray, Max Brand, Ernest Haycox, Luke Short; Louis Lmour and Larry McMurty played important roles in the development of Western novels. Western novels are mainly based on cowboy stones. They are especially beautiful scenery in American literature. But for a long time, many critics rejected the Western as literature.
