On Chinese And English Appellation Words------A Comparison And Translation

Appellation is an important sociolinguistic phenomenon, carryingstrong cultural flavors and pragmatic characteristics. When mentioningappellation words, people will inevitably be reminded of Kinship and Non-Kinship Appellation Words. Because of the deep disparities between easternand western cultures, undoubtedly great differences exist between Chinese andEnglish appellation words. In the appellation system, "appellation word" and"term of address" are two different conceptions. Although the latter plays amore important role in communications, it is just a part of the formerA large number of Chinese and foreign researchers have already madegood studies on this subject, yet some of them solely deal with "appellationterm", some solely deal with "term of address", some even confuse the two.Few ever study them together and clearly distinguish them. As for translationof appellation words between Chinese and English, most researchers justscratch the surface. For many appellation words, no definite methods oftranslation are given. Even the same translator puts the same appellation worddifferently in different literary works, which really puzzles readers.In this thesis, the author compares Chinese and English Kinship andNon-Kinship appellation words from the angle of culture and points out someChinese appellation words that need to be improved. On the basis of thecomparison, the author starts with "literal translation and free translation" aswell as "alienation and domestication" in order to talk about the translation ofvarious appellation phenomena. In the end, the author discusses the problemof "limit of translatability" caused by the specialties in English and Chinese.
