Australian literature has played a leading role in the introduction of Australian studies in China. Its novels, particularly, are well worth studying. My thesis traces the development of Australian novels for about 200 years from the perspective of nationalization and internationalization in four different periods.. The first is the colonial period when there is still no clear awareness of nationalization in the novels. The second is the period from 1 890s or so to the outbreak of World War One. This period witnesses the springing up of nationalization. The third is the nearly three decades between the two World Wars. Australian novels have a further development of nationalization. The fourth is the contemporary period after World War Two, which is characterized by its unprecedented prosperity and diversity under the interweaving force of nationalization and internationalization. Since it is impossible to cover all writers and their works appeared in the past two centuries, I choose those major novelists and their representative works for the discussion of their respective features in subject, theme, form or language.
