As everyone knows, vocabulary has a close relationship with reading comprehension. The aim of the thesis is to discuss DMU nautical English reading textbook vocabulary. In the first two chapters, the theory of subgrading is introduced. Then a series of programs and analyses are used to compare the textbook vocabulary and the minimal receptive nautical English words, the textbook vocabulary and the optimal receptive nautical English words. We can draw a conclusion from the final result that the textbook provides the enough vocabulary for the basic nautical English reading. If a reader wants to read advanced nautical English materials, he has to learn more words. In this way, we can say DMU textbook is not perfect. We would like to give the compiler a suggestion that a good textbook should provide at least 3,000 nautical English words and a certain number of CEB (College English Band) words. In other words, the compiler had better add a great number of nautical English words to the textbook when it is compiled again.
