Hong Lou Meng is the most popular book and the greatest artistic literary work in the whole history of Chinese literature. Many people have studied on it, and more people have read, heard about it and appreciated it. Hong Lou Meng has been translated into English, French, Japanese and many other languages since over a hundred years ago. However, even in the world literature today, Hong Lou Meng still remains of little influence. Few people really understand this book. Some may have read but misunderstood it. This paradox of high artistic achievement and relatively low popularity in the west highly motivated the author of this thesis to study the problem of the translation of Hong Lou Meng . Because metaphor plays a vital part in the artistic achievements of Hong Lou Meng, the research of the translation of metaphors in the novel has the great significance in translation of the whole book,This thesis discusses three objective factors, namely necessary conditions that significantly influence the translatability of metaphors in Hong Lou Meng. Chapter 2 of this thesis is about the influences of linguistic condition on translation of metaphor in terms of the uniqueness of linguistic structure of Chinese in metaphoric expressions. Chapter 3 is about the influences of cultural condition on the translation of metaphor from the perspectives of the identification, interpretation and translation of metaphors in Hong Lou Meng. Chapter 4 analyzes the condition of the social background under which. Hong Lou Meng was composed as a full-scale allegory, an extended metaphor and concludes that, for the target readers who have no this social background knowledge, the allegory cannot be identified and understood, so it is difficult to translate it.With the research of the three necessary conditions for the translating metaphors in Hong Lou Meng, the author concludes that, the translatability of metaphors in Hong Lou Meng is significantly reduced and the translatability may be increased with the growing cultural communication in the future between China and the west.
