This thesis aims to find an effective way of improving the college English teaching in China. According to the theories of communicative language teaching, the development of the learners' communicative competence should be the main purpose of our college English teaching. The task-based communicative activities are thought to be feasible techniques to develop such competence. This thesis is composed of four chapters:Chapter One focuses on the theory of communicative competence resulting from the distinction between "competence" and "performance". Halliday's study on the functions of language will help the recognition of the nature of language from the sociolinguistic aspect.Chapter Two makes a further discussion about the application of the theory of communicative competence to the language teaching. It's feasible and efficient to apply thefully developed proportional model to develop the learners' proficiency.Chapter Three aims at applying the theory of communicative competence to the college English in China. In this chapter, the thesis concentrates on how to take advantage of the task-based communicative activities to develop the Chinese college learners' communicative competenceChapter Four is a conclusion of all the previous discussion and puts forward that developing the learners' communicative competence by means of communicative activities will be of some significance to our college English teaching.
