Although China's TEFL has gone through many years' reforms, deeply-rooted habits and educational realities still make our eyes focus on the language forms, for example, the emphasis on the practicing and grasping of pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, ignores the social meaning of language and it's actual usage in certain circumstances. In recent years, with the rapid growth of economy, the depth of open policy and China's successful access into WTO, there would be more and more contacts with foreigners. Meanwhile, there is a great need, for high-level English learners. So China's TEFL becomes the center of public attention on how to meet the needs in new situations.China's TEFL was influenced greatly by the putting forward of "communicative competence" and expressions in many ways that the later linguists and applied linguists give about it. Many a modern applied linguists, the designer of Syllabus for foreign language teaching, the compiler of foreign language materials and teachers of foreign language regard the fostering of students' communicative competence as the guide thoughts and final aim of foreign language teaching. Communication became the main principle of foreign language teaching. As we know, one key factor to successful communication results in one's grasping and application of communicative principles. On the basis of communicative language teaching as well as combining author's teaching practice, this thesis is made by four parts, which give descriptions on the application of the communicative principles in foreign language teaching.Chapter One: Introduction. On the basis of language and communication, the necessity of communicative principles in TEFL is indicated.Chapter Two: Literature review of communicative principles on the basis of pioneers' research works. According to Jack C. Richards' descriptions of different communicative needs, the five principles of communication are presented.Chapter Three: Application of communicative principles in TEFL. Author gave descriptions about how to introduce the communicative principles by means of teachingethods, and how to carry out the communicative principles by communicative moves in Intensive Reading class for the aim of fostering the students' communicative competence. Meanwhile, some factors that should be paid attention to are also discussed.Chapter Four: Conclusion. The application of communicative principles in TEFL is proved to be effective; the students' communicative competence is developed actually. Meanwhile, the progress of students' communicative competence improves TEFL.
