Pei Xi is a book of Chinese characters written by Guo Zhongshu. It epitomized the dictionaries of Chinese characters which are produced since WeiJin. Nowadays, it is worth standardizing Chinese characters and researching their developing rules.The author tries to analyze the contents of Pei Xi with some scientific approaches and discuss its significance in philology. This thesis will also provide some reliable reference materials for case study.This thesis mainly researches Pei Xi from the following perspectives:1) According to all the materials available, the life and works of Guo Zhongshu, the author of Pei Xi, are investigated.2) It corrects the time about Pei Xi's occurrence and talks about the possibilities and inevitabilities of Pei Xi's forming.3) It clarifies the editions of Pei Xi and collates them.4) The history of studying of Pei Xi is divided into three periods in this thesis. Meanwhile, some infelicities in each period are pointed out.5) It introduces stylistic rules and layout of Pei Xi.6) It analyzes Guo Zhongshu's theory about Chinese characters and their evolving rules, which is the focus of study in this thesis.7) The author draws a conclusion by summing up the values of Pei Xi, as well as its' influences.8) It enumerates three appendices that verify the main body of this thesis and provides some references for relevant studies.
