Hongke and his novels have brought a fresh air to the literary world in the 1990's. Hongke, born in Shaanxi province, went to Xinjiang after graduation and spent the most important ten years in his life there. From loess plateau to desert, Hongke has got quite different experiences in these two places. He especially felt the greatness of life in the desolate and grand West China. The words and lines in his novels are permeated with his own experience and observation of life, and his readers are enabled to feel the existence of a kind of poetic life condition in a free and happy manner.Hongke is a black horse in China's literary world. His short novels have won several national prizes, which makes his name more and more popular. However, for many people, Hongke's fame seems to have be got suddenly. Thus, until now, there still lack systematic and overall studies on the writing of Hongke. And the existent articles about the criticism of Hongke's novels are all criticism or evaluation concerning just one of his novels. Considering this, the author endeavors to really do some contribution to the study of Hongke's novels. This thesis, with Hongke's novels as its basis, intends to analyze the characteristics of Hongke's writing both macroscopically and microscopically. The whole thesis is divided into two chapters. The first chapter analyzes Hongke's novels from an overall aspect, and studies the influence exerted by Taoism on his novels and the ideal homeland that his novels have constructed for the spiritually poor modern people. At the same time, this chapter also points out the defects of his writing. The second chapter is a specific analysis of Hongke's novels from three aspects, namely, the life consciousness in an ultimate sense, the pursuit of a kind of "outlandish" language, and the aesthetic characteristics of his novels. Hongke's novels put great emphasis on life, and life is appreciated; however, they also pay considerable attention to death. The narrating structure of his novels eliminates the conception of time from the root, and the gap between life and death is omitted in his novels. Hongke regards the form of expression as a very important factor, and his use of words is flexible. He is also adept at adopting various rhetorical devices to awaken theinfeelings of people and make them realize the boundless possibility of communication among all the beings in the world. The author of this thesis endeavors to make her thesis to be a unity of specific points and the whole and to really achieve something. This thesis is also intended to reflect the essential artistry of Hongke's novels to readers in their obtainment of a primary understanding. Through reading readers should be able to realize and admire Hongke's profound cultural accomplishments and solid foundation in art so as to get a better understanding and command of his novels, which are unique in the contemporary literary world.
