The present dissertation consists of a close examination of the dramatic features in Hardy's novels. It is divided into three sections.The first section introduces Thomas Hardy and the third group of his novels about personality and environment. It puts forward the argument about the dramatic features in Hardy's novels.The second section has four parts. Part I discusses dramatic conflict in Hardy's novels. The author of the present dissertation chooses some of Hardy's early novels, and middle period and late period novels as examples and finds out that Hardy's novels are full of various kinds of dramatic conflict. Part II examines crisis, coincidence and suspense in Hardy's novels and concludes that Hardy has successfully borrowed dramatic techniques and put them in his novels. He has combined together the crisis artistry of drama with the gradual changes artistry of novels and has produced novels full of vivid pictures. Part III explores the dramatic descriptions and dramatic dialogues in Hardy's novels and discovers that Hardy has produced the description and the dialogue in his novels similar to those in drama.The last section gives the reason why Hardy's novels are full of dramatic features. It looks back at the history of the study of Hardy's novels and looks forward to the future of the study of Hardy's novels.
