The Indigenization is an indispensable step during the spreading process of any religion, and the self-supporting of a church is the first step of the indigenization. After the Protestantism entered China in 1807,it was confronted with the same problem. The dissertation traces the historical development of the self-supporting in the late Qing Dynasty, expounds upon the background, explores the attempts of the Protestant missionaries and conducts some typical cases. What's more, this paper reveals the resistance to self-supporting from several angles. At last, the writer discusses the link between the self-supporting and and"Sanzi"(self-support-ing, self-propagating and self-governing)in the 20th century. The dissertation, guided by Marxist materialism, combining the relevant knowledge, theories and approaches in the studies of history, religion and economics, with the hope of conducting a micro-studying on the self-supporting of the Protestant missions in the late Qing Dynasty. The dissertation also attempts to bring forth some new academic value in theoretical studies.
