As a famous British Sinologist and missionary in the nineteenth century, Joseph Edkins (1823-1905) translated a large number of western scientific works during the several decades he lived in China. He was also a distinguished scholar in Chinese language, history, religion and economy. Although some achievements have been made in the researches on Joseph’s works in recent years, there are still a great deal of his works which were never be mentioned especially in the Chinese researches. J. Edkins’ work "Religion in China", which first published in1878, owns a great value to study of modern Sino-foreign exchange and late Qing history, and no satisfactory research have been made on it. This dissertation will focus on the book, to show his research on the Chinese religions and his concept of coexistence of different religions. |
