In the early 20th century, when modern higher education was growing in China,West China University of Medical Sciences, the first medical university of Sichuan, was built. More than 20 years later,West China University of Medical Sciences became one of the most prominent medical universities in China. In 1937,with the advent of the Anti-Japanese War,the schools in North China and East China soon became the targets of the Japanese army. So,KMT Government ordered these schools to move to the safer places. In the movement,12 medical universities came to Sichuan. It was not only a great challenge but also a good chance to Sichuan's medical education. This article focuses on the moving to Sichuan of medical universities in the Anti-Japanese War,in order to probe into the status of and the reason for the development of these medical universities, and the effect the moving brought on Sichuan's medical education. There are three parts in this article:firstly, the movement and the development of 12 medical universities in Sichuan;secondly, the reason for 12 medicaluniversities' development in Sichuan; lastly, the historical contributions of 12medical universities.Although the negative impact of KMT regime was not negligible, yet 12 medical universities made an obvious contribution to the development of Sichuan's medical education, and also left a significant effect on the local public health.
