In the early history of Christianity, missionaries usually preached by means of medicine, which was an important component of Trinitarianism, the church medical service is in congruent with the spirit of charity and generosity proposed by Jesus. The main duty missionaries who came to China was not to build up church hospital, but to deliver the sermon.Before the break-out of the Opium War, the Protestant, one of branches of Christianity, was introduced into China with the efforts of Robert Morrison. But at that time, a foreigner was not permitted to enter China if he claimed to be a missionary and preaching was also prohibited in China. Therefore, the medical service of the missionary always focused on the East-South China. After the war, a series of unfair treaties have been signed out of the willingness of the Chinese people, Protestant missionaries flushed into China with the protection of the Term of Preach. The missionaries regarded West China, especially Sichuan Province, as the potential mission field. During this period of time, the development of medical service was so distinctive that it drew much attention.This thesis attempts to provide a comprehensively historical survey of the Christian Medical Service as it examines the background and social context of the Christian Medical Service, the policies of the Medical Missions, the Medical Work of the Church Hospital, the Medical Education of the Medical College of WUUC, the propaganda of the Church magazines. And the author hopes to arouse the interest of the Christian Medical Service in Modern Sichuan in the scholars who are studying the relationship between Christianity and Chinese society.the relationship between Christianity and Chinese society.From the view of Modern history, Sichuan area covers Sichuan Province, Chongqing as well as the areas between Sichuan and the boundary Provinces. The topic of this thesis includes these areas, mainly concentrating on Sichuan Province. And the time ranges from the First Opium War to the 1940s, which is a bit longer than the period time in modern history (1940-1919).
