Xuling was an influential poet during the periods of Liang and Chen in the South Dynasty . In Liang Dynasty Xuling was renowned with Yuxin for their "Xu-Yu style " poetry . In Chen Dynasty Xuling was regarded as the master of poetry in his time. As the result that the studies on Xuling till now haven't been carried out thoroughly, this thesis ,by analysing the tone and meter of Xuling's poetry and comparing his poetry with that of other poets such as Shenyuc ,Yuxin etc.,tries to track the developing trail of poetry from "Yongming Style " to metrical poetry as well as discuss the roles which Xuling played in the formation of poetical meter. This thesis is composed of six chapeters . Chapter One interprets several questions. Chapter Two deals with the analysis of tone and metrical false in Xuling's potery as well as the comparision between Xuling's polery and Shenyue's potery . Chapter Three interprets unique application of Die rules of tone mid metrical false and its significance. Chapter Four talks about the relation between Xuling's poetry and the metrical poetry . Chapter Five concerns with those poets Xuling influenced and was influenced . The last chapter is the conclusion. This thesis holds such views as follows:(I)Xuling's creation deviated from the metrical false rules of "Yongming Style" ,moreover happened to coincide with the theroy proposed by Yuanjing of "being lenient of the false of "Pingsheng" and "Latter four mistakes(mainly refer to "Xiaoyun and Bangniu). The former four mistakes belong to the false in using four sounds. By contrast the latter four mistakes are the false in using double sounds and repeated same vowels. Xuling concerned mainly about the application of four kinds of metrical false and he tried to simplize the excessively detailed rules of "Yongming style". His unique deal with "Pinglou" expressed his attention to the second word in every sentence ,which is the key to the formation of "adherence" in poem .(II)By examing the pattern ,rhythm ,antithesis in the potery of Xuling ,we can reach the conclusion that his poetry was roughly in line with the rules of metrical poetry . Meanwhile parts of his poems have already met the demand of five-word metrical potery ,which proved that pattern of five-character metrical potery had come into being through Xuling .(III)The era that Xuling was living was eharaterized with the popularity of phonology . Xuchi ,Xuling's father ,was good at the use of tone and meter ,and aware of avoiding making mistakes in the former four mistakes. In his poetry the same tone seldom appeared in two consecutive sentence. He could write the poems of five-characters and eightlines in line with the rules of the poetry's tone and meter in Tang Dynasty. Inevitably in his creations Xuling was affected by his father Xuchi . People living in Sui and Tang dynasties considered Xuling as the model of avoiding making the mistake of phonology . His careful study of tone and meter in poetry caused the attention of his contemporaries and later generations. It was on the basis of the practice of such poets as Xuling that Yuanjing living at the beginning of Tang Dynasty proposed the theory of the poetical meter ,such as "being lenient of the false of Pingsheng ","being lenient of the latter four mistakes in rhyme and meter",and "adherence".It was during the periods of Liang and Chen that fiveword metrical poetry came into being . In this stage Xuling played a key role . While we explore the developing history of poetical meter nowadays ,we should surely affirm his role of linking the perceeding with the following in the formation of the poetical meter.
