On Li Yu's Double Character And His Novels

Li Yu is an important figure in the literaty history of Qing Dynasty, his achievement in drama has been affirmed by modern scholars. But his novels are always ignored. Maybe it is concerned with his special character. Li Yu was born in a merchant's family, and he once went through a chaos time, all these determined his special character, then these character determined not only his life principle, but also the feature of his novels. The intellectual's character and the merchant's character sometimes have to conflict each other, and the end of conflict is taking shape the feature of novels as follows: he paid attention to create the pattern of the structure and the figure in the novels; he used a kind of language which has both exquisite and popular character; he diminished the teaching flavor but strengthened the flavor of Deconstructionism. But the defect of Li Yu's novels maybe comes from the conflict, too. It behaved that the novels occurred fracture on both content and structure. At last, we could establish the position of Li Yu's novels in the literary history though studying the double character. Li Yu's novels completed the form of novels on the one hand, and it expanded the influnce in society on the other hand, so it layed foundation for Chinese novels for completing it's modernization. This text will analyzed Li Yu's novel theory and his works, and tend to reveal the real value and it's right position in the literary history objectively through occurring the theory of Reception-theory and Narrative-theory.
