FengZhi is one of the important poets in the modern literature history of China. His free verses before 1949 can be roughly divided into two phases. The verses in the first phase, the whole of 1920s, are mainly composed of lyric and narrative poems which have romantic-aesthetic artistic taste, while his verses in the second phase, the early of 1940s, are chiefly made up of philosophic poems which have modernistic taste. This thesis is made up of two chapters according to the characteristics of FengZhi's free verses discussed above. Through the general grasp of FengZhi's early works and the concrete artistic analysis of his representative works, the first chapter illustrates from two aspects the internal link of his inner reflections and pursuit of ideals with the spirit and pulse of May 4 Movement: loneliness of youth, longing for love and concern for reality, depression of life. By making an overall investigation of the cultural resources that affect his creation of early works, the first chapter also brings into prominence the rich aesthetic connotation of his artistic world. The second chapter first expounds the artistic continuity and transcendence, the shows the profound and rich implication of his thoughts through probing into the close relations between his Collection of Sonnets and existentialism, and finally systematically expounds the formal characteristics of Collection of Sonnets from various aspects on the basis of contrasting standardized from of sonnets with its deviation.
