The great classical realistic novel, A Dream of Red Mansions, is the peak among Chinese classical novels. It focuses on the love and marriage tragedies among three aristocrats: Jia Baoyu, Lin Daiyu and Xue Baochai. It depicts the daily life in Jia family and its complex conflicts within and out of the family to disclose the appalling darkness and evils in the end of the feudal society. It fully and strongly animadverts on the feudal ruling class and the society, and shows the doom of the class. With abundant animated artistic figures, it truly reflects the society and the history.The history of stylistics in Europe could be traced back to "rhetoric" in ancient Greece. In the early twentieth century, with the development of modern linguistic theories, stylistics focusing on language features gradually flourished. It is the embranchment of the classical rhetoric, whose scale is even larger than modern rhetoric. Stylistics was further integrated with literary criticism to shape the literary stylistics. In this thesis, the author will try to study the application of literary stylistics in the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions.A Dream of Red Mansions involves many literary styles, including narratives, dialogues, poetry, antithetical couplets and folk adages, etc. The features of the styles in the translation of A Dream of Red Mansions and the comparison between it and the other styles are analyzed. This novel will be analyzed from the perspective of stylistics, including text analysis of various styles. Through the analysis and comparisons, translation methods of different styles are studied, and translation experience is summarized to guide the translation practice. Besides introduction and conclusion, there are six chapters.The introduction briefly generalizes the theme and basic structure of the thesis.Chapter one introduces stylistics and its application from diachronic and synchronic angles, and the basic condition and translations of the classical novel, A Dream of Red Mansions.Chapter two discusses the characteristics of narratives, the comparison with other styles and the stylistic analysis of the translation.Chapter three focuses on the characteristics of dialogues from the perspective of stylistics, the comparison with other styles,, and stylistic analysis of the translation.Chapter four focuses on the characteristics of poems, its comparison with other styles to emphasize its features, discussion on the translation, and the characteristics and translation of antithetical couplets is discussed.Chapter five analyzes the features of folk adages, its translation, and enigmatic folk similes.Chapter six studies the translatability of styles. Theories and examples are given to prove the styles in A Dream of Red Mansions are translatable.Conclusion is the review and summery of the whole thesis.
