On Translating "A Dream Of Red Mansions" Into Japanese:Finding Appropriate Words For Antiques

In recent years,China's international status has become higher and higher.The appeal of tasting Chinese traditional culture and reading excellent literary works is rising all over the world.The number of translators involved is also increasing.As a representative of classical literature,“A Dream of Red Mansions” has been studied in many fields in later generations.In addition,as the earliest country where this work was introduced into foreign countries,Japan also has extensive research on the relevant content of it.Among them,a number of famous Redology(the study of “A Dream of Red Mansions”)researchers are emerging in large numbers.For example,Shigeo Matsumoto and Sohe ITO are the important representatives.In addition,according to the author,701 terms related to antiques appeared in this work.Antiques are not only the representative of ancient Chinese traditional culture,but also have their unique appellations to a certain extent.These words in the Japanese translation will be the inevitable translation problems.On the other hand,translatability and untranslatability have always been controversial topics in the field of translation.This thesis focuses on the research on the limits of translatability and the solutions to untranslatability.This paper is divided into six chapters.The first chapter is the introduction of this study,mainly outlining the research background and purpose,domestic and foreign research status,research content,methods and objectives.Chapter two gives a detailed introduction to the definition,origin,characteristics of the antiques in Qing dynasty,types of antique expressions in “A Dream of Red Mansions”,and the relationship between antique expressions and antique culture.The third chapter,focus on the Japanese translation of “A Dream of Red Mansions”,it introduces the respective translation achievements and methods of Shigeo Matsumoto and Sohe ITO,compares their translations,and analyzes their similarities and differences as well as their shortcomings.The fourth chapter explains the definition and content of translatability,the translatability performance of antiques in Japanese translation,and the scope,principles and translation means of translatability.Chapter five probes into the definition and causes of untranslatability,the untranslatability of antiques in Japanese translation,and the translation methods to solve untranslatability.The sixth chapter as the conclusion of this paper summarizes the relevant research results.
