The industrial designer is a living example of the integration referred to in the title of this book. Designers come from several different disciplines to work that require both technical knowledge and creative sensibility, along with a highly specific understanding of the way the world, and the people and objects in it, really work. The design of a successful product cannot be achieved without integrated teamwork, and close communication with other professionals. The designer at any given time is not only working at an individual task, but has clearly in mind the whole design process, which involves the integration of many detailed processes within larger processes-a pattern that repeats itself over and over in any project-and integrates planning and marketing, computer and information technology, engineering and manufacturing. To give an overview of the process, from the initial idea to the final product, is the main purpose of this book. The article itself, as the title also implies, aims to integrate the methodology and practice of the design process into a coherent whole.Since the designer at any given time is not only working at an individual task but is also a member of a team, he or she must keep clearly in mind the whole design process, which involves the integration of many detailed processes within larger processes and integrates planning and marketing, computer the information technology, engineering and manufacturing. An underlying theme of this article is that what I s most important today is not only how a product is made, or even its innovative quality. We live in a world that is overflowing with products-a situation that has created its own problems-and we are capable of making most of the things we reasonably can be said to need. The real question is: what are we going to make, and why? What will be crucial in the next century will be to reach an understanding of relationships such as those between human beings and the products they use, between human beings and machines, between products and the environment-andof how design fits into the picture in other words, of what the true objectives of design should be.
