World development is speeding up its pace and has required a smaller world running with more communications among different countries. Simultaneous interpretation has proved itself more favored in this modern society. This calls on quality improvements of simultaneous interpretation by doing more studies. Speech errors, as a common phenomenon in the process of simultaneous interpretation, should be concerned and studied in a detailed way. This paper discusses speech errors occurring in the process of simultaneous interpretation from Chinese into English and repair mechanisms based on the philosophy of Levelt's speech production. The research examines the applicability of Levelt's (1989) model of speech production to speech production in simultaneous interpretation in general, and to the production of speech errors in particular. His model is first presented specifically, giving clear discussion about the speech errors that take place in spontaneous speech. Then when it is invited in the case of simultaneous interpretation, speech errors appearing in simultaneous interpretation are classified and analyzed based on the Levelt's model, some phenomena of deviations from his original model are found and thus are discussed. Data gathered from my personal research are analyzed in which some trainee interpreters with same background level do the simultaneous interpretation in a mock conference. As the incomplete applicability of Levelt's model is evident to the speech production of simultaneous interpretation, suggested extension of the original model is developed after the data analyses. The result suggests that speech errors in simultaneous interpretation can be studied based on Levelt's model to speech production, but the original model need slight retouching. Subdivision of the speech comprehension system is required to incorporate with speech production system in simultaneous interpretation.
