Taking poetry and document as a starting point, this thesis touches upon the historical development of Zen and the poets acceptance Zen philosophy, so as to make known the relationship between Zen and poetry in terms of its creation and theory during the flourishing and middle Tang Dynasty.This thesis falls into four chapters.The first chapter surveys Wang Wei's Zen philosophy and his poems. Owing to a prolonged and intense contemplation, in Wang Wei's scenery verse with hills and waters obviously arises one kind of "Internal rotation" trend. The poems in his early life depict the beauty of nature, but those in his late years often express the quiet transparent mind. The second chapter discusses Jiao Ran in middle Tang Dynasty. Jiao Ran introduces the term "action" into the study of poetry territory, and arrives at the understanding that's not at all in common with the then prevailing one. The third chapter analyses the ideas and poems of Liu Zongyuan. Against Hongzhou sect, Liu Zongyuan show a strong resistance to Zen thought. The fourth chapter is mainly concerned with Bai Juyi who is seen as an outstanding example of a Zen practitioner. The theory of Hongzhou sect has deeply influenced his pastoral poems and theory.This thesis is hope to be of help to study the influence of Zen on poetry.
