There is an essential distinction between the leftist literature in 1930s and the ultra-left trend of thought which makes the development of Chinese contemporary literature narrower and slower. The leftist literature in 1930s is rich because its taking shape depends on many factors. However, as for the object of literary description, the leftist writers focus on the proletariat in their works under the strong demand of times. And as the main force of the revolution led by the Chinese Communist Party, "the masses"are imposed on an ideological meaning by politics and specially refer to the proletariat. The change of the object lead to some changes accordingly. "The proletariat" become a central issue in the politics-literature structure where the leftist writers stand. How to describe "the proletariat" has been the key to the leftist writers' realism works.The present paper concentrate on the way "the proletariat" are described in the leftist writers' works. Taking "the images of proletariat" as the point of contract, the author study the leftist literature in 1930s in the light of the development of the leftist literary theory. What the author tries her best to do is to go further into the success and the failure of the leftist literature in 1930s and think deeply about how to understand and inherit "the leftist literary spirit".There are five parts in the paper. The first part expound the process of the leftist literary descriptive objects' change in 1930s, furthermore, "the images of proletariat" are confined in the political meaning. The second part expound the establish of "the popularize of literature" and the corresponding changes in the way of literary creation. Not only" new realism" but also "materialist dialectics" are still affected by the ultra-left trend of thought ,so the leftist writers' initiative is controlled. The third part expound that "the fence" come into being in the course of leftist writers creat "the images of proletariat" in their works. As a result, "the fence" exerts bad influence onthese works. The fourth part expound the great efforts to transcend "the fence". Compared with the limited progress in leftist literary theory, "Wu-Si" literary spirit and individual character give the leftist writers more motive power to develop realism. The fifth part gives a detailed analyze to "the images of proletariat " in the leftist writers in the middle and late 1930s. They break through "the fence" with their success in creation, because they persist in the special essence of literature and inherit critical realism of "Wu-Si" literature. However, class viewpoint and strong demand of times confine their pursue for deep criticism and philosophic meaning in works.We gain a good deal of enlightenment from the leftist literature in 1930s. First, the influence exerted on the leftist literature by politics should be divided two. Secondly, the leftist literature can be traced to "Wu-Si" literature and the enlightenment in thought is still one important aspect of the leftist literature in 1930s.
