On ECST's Features And Its E-C Translation

With the development of sci-tech and the globalization, as a variety of EST, ECST (English for common science and technology) is becoming more and more important and popular. ECST possesses peculiarities, which command attention and research in pursuit of its satisfactory E-C translation.The thesis begins with a brief account of ECST's definition, classification, its Chinese translation evolution and function.Then, it highlights the features of ECST. From a lexical point of view, ECST utilizes exact and formal words, personal and humorous words and highly technical and semi-technical words. In addition, because of description of the latest science-related events and figures, ECST makes a preference for strong verbs and verbals, favoring abbreviations, coinages and borrowed words, which are used by the unique word-building devices.Systemically, ECST alternately uses long and short sentences, and simple and complex sentences as well, with lightly more passive voice. In a semantic perspective, ECST's writing method can be named "stream of sci-tech information", in which the meaning is linking up sentence by sentence, paragraph by paragraph in a whole text.Speaking of style, ECST exhibits the formal written and informational communicative style. For the rhetoric, ECST employs a multiplicity of means to enhance its effect and appeal. The frequently exploited rhetorical devices include lexical devices, metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and allusion, etc., and syntactic devices, personification, parallelism and antithesis, etc. ECST's text involves all four types of writing, namely, description, narration, exposition, and argumentation, often combining several forms together.Compared to ECST, its Chinese counterpart has more similarities than differences, using more simple and short sentences, idioms and stereotyped titles.After drawing on some translation principles at home and abroad, the author finally proposes a set of concrete principles which can be 8 sub-principles for ECST's C-E translation, i.e., 1) faithfulness to the author, 2) service to the reader, 3) discourse manipulation, 4) logic clarity, 5) expressive naturalness, 6) cohesiveness to original style, 7) conformity to the age, 8) creative adaptation.
