Harbored in Laoshe's humorous and harmonious artistic style, the tragic consciousness plays to its full potential, which paves the way for the social phenomena described in his works.Having perceived the relationship between man and universe, nature and society, and undergone the transcendence of cognition and spirit, Laoshe depicts the tragic consciousness special to his own times and social background. And the formation of this consciousness contributes mainly to two aspects: one is from perceptional cognition of the life of the poverty; the other is from rational cognition of the destiny of the whole nation.Tragedy in Laoshe's works deeply reflects his tragic consciousness ?the tragedy of individual life and national culture. The individual tragedy comes not only from the toughness of life but from a further spiritual depiction. And the individuals portrayed are really commonplace but unavoidably trapped in various disasters and torments, just like the old saying goes:"Flies can never escape the prey of spider web." As to the individual tragedy, Laoshe focused on three types, namely, the helpless who has spiritually degenerated; the combatant who has tried hard but finally meet his doom; and the compromiser who has idled away the days and lost their value of life. In this way, he criticizes the degenerated society and the deformed relationship of human beings at the thought of life and death. On the other hand, Laoshe depicts the national tragedy from the point view of traditional culture - whether from the collapse of century-old shops or from the illusion of traditional nationalism. Though this, he advocates and attaches great importance to the reconstruction of modern national spirit.Lack of sharp conflicts in his works, Laoshe spares no efforts in the depiction of conscious and cultural psychology struggles, which leaves his reader mere the impression of pain, constraint and depression. With the help of deep tragicconsciousness presented by his unique artistic style, Laoshe is preoccupied with the concern of the future of his people and his nation.
