Yan Lianke's novels evdiently possess tragic consciousness. It is just the tragic consciousness thatmakes Yan Lianke penetrate into the emotion and thoughts of our people, and makes Yan Lianke's novelsbecome unique arts including cultural value and aesthetic significance. Therefore, to interpret the tragicconsciousness is an important perspective to understand Yan Lianke's novels.This thesis first analyzes howYan Lianke's tragic consciousness formed, and analyzes the connotation and form of tragic consciousnessin order to disclose abundant cultural value and aesthetic meaning of Yan Lianke'novels.This thesis holds that Yan Lianke's tragic consciousness derive from his painful life experience in hischildhood, the dilemma of emotion between city and country, and horror toward disease since his boyhood.Yan Lianke integrates individualized tragic consciousness into his novels naturally and consciously,thus his novels pervade a particular tragic atmosphere, a tragic emotion throughout, a stirring tragicsentiment and convey a lamenting beauty between sadness and solemnity. The connotation of the tragicconsciousness includes: tragedy of life, tragedy of humanity and tragedy of destiny.In Yan Lianke's novels,Tragedy of Life is tragedy that peasants'lives are destroyed and dehumanized, and that country livesbecome numb; Tragedy of Humanity embodies the writer's revelation and criticism toward the evil ofhumanity; Tragedy of Destiny expresses the writer's exploration on the meaning of existence by displayingthe conflict between human and nature,and the conflict between human and disease.After analyzing the forming and connotation of Yan Lianke's tragic consciousness, this thesis alsoanalyzes its artistic form. Basing on his own experience and thought, Yan Lianke makes his novels possessparticular aesthetic form tragic structure that sadness and happiness alternate; and tragic language.This thesis claims that Yan Lianke's tragic consciousness enhances complexity, variety and profundityof Yan Lianke's novels, sublimates Yan Lianke's novels'artistic charm and realm, and possess importantcultural and aesthetic connation. His novels develop the tragic tradition of Chinese literature, contradictobstinate aesthetic consciousness of comedy in present, and reflect the writer's responsibility.
