During the modern contexts of which China had been confronting severe crisis and been in fluctuating waves of reformation and revolution movement for national independence and progress, the culture of adherents of a former dynasty was widely propagated and expounded to stir up national emotion. Zhou Zuoren began to eccept this culture during the atomosphere of national-democratic revolution at the turning of 19th century and 20th century, then put forward his personal explanation intensively when the Anti-Japanese War broke out in the 1930's. But his degenerate behaviour of losing national integrity was gone against the essence of this culture, when Peking was occupied by the enemies. Such a contradiction is just the starting point of this paper. From his relationship with this culture, the thesis analyses Zhou Zuoren's uniqueness of his explanation on the culture as an individualist after May 4th ,i.e. his reformation on the culture by using individual words and displays one's difficult choice of fortune and spiritual perplexity during the troubled times, and tries to show some possible reasons of his betray to individualism and nationalism.
