The new drive prevailing in translation studies, both home and abroad, is an orientation toward cultural studies, aiming at matching the TL texts and SL texts in meanings, functions, senses, implications, feelings and other cultural significances; therefore the mission of cross-cultural communication calls for not only the bilingual proficiency but also the bicultural competence on the part of translators. This paper explores the justifications f this move in translation studies and makes an investigation i1 ie translations by Lin Yutang as well as illustrates his success a ie leading interpreter of China to the West' from the perspective of cross-cultural communication instead of inter-lingual translation.
