UNESCO designated 2002-2003 as the millennium celebration of King Gesar, which has greatly encouraged me to read the epic and initiate the study of it. While absorbing western culture heritage, I realize that introducing our own culture to western world, to some extent, is more urgent and significant. In King Gesar, women characters play indispensable roles. Among various characters in Gesar, more familiar to people is the male character Gesar, he serves as the model of old ideals, from whom we learn about heroic power, courage, strength and so on. Brugmo, the queen of Ling, who was treated as the symbol of beauty, virtue and hardworking, sheds some light on the whole epic's aesthetic value. What's more, her courageous personality and military talents revealed in the war give her undeniable status in the epic's richness. Other women characters too enhance the distinctive female image in the epic.Female figures like Brugmo in the epic King Gesar construct the central theme that I want to explore in the thesis, but during the writing process, I realized that without a detailed introduction of the epic itself, the female image study would be 'abrupt' and unnatural. However, by doing so, readers may think that the thesis central theme is somewhat discerned. This is mainly because of the epic's special characteristics which I contribute a couple of pages to explain in the thesis. What I want to reinforce here is that no matter what issue discussed in the thesis, they all finally serve to aid people to appreciate the epic through a woman's perspective, be it ballad singers study, be it historical research or overseas study.Though I stated in the thesis several times that there are many obstacles on Gesar studies, they are not the excuses for the immature parts of my thesis. I feel that I have shared in the heroine's turns and turmoil of love, hatred and jealousy, drawing us closer together. What's more, I try to analyze the female figure through historical background, and by doing so, female image--a vantage point from which Tibetan's social and cultural life can be perceived, especially women's life in the time of the epic's creation can be revealed. However, there are still more work to do concerningthe thesis theme. Namely, more plots about female images in King Gesar should be employed to be more supportive to the central theme of the thesis. And feminist theories should be adopted in character analysis, which would enhance the depth of the analysis. All in all, I will not stop the steps in improving the study of the epic King Gesar and thus make more contributions to it.
